Senior PALS Volunteer Program

Loneliness and social isolation in older persons have been linked to an increase in high blood pressure, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, obesity, a weakened immune system, anxiety and depression. Senior PALS, an AmeriCorps Seniors program of LIFE Senior Services, utilizes the power of volunteerism to reach out to those who may feel alone and let them know that someone cares. There are three different ways to help:

  1. "Thinking of You" cards. Gather with a small group and create hand crafted cards, which will be distributed to nursing home patients.
  2. Care packs. Put together small care packages, which will be distributed to those individuals who have been referred by a case manager.
  3. Well-check calls. Just a little call to let someone know they are being thought of. Brief phone calls to individuals who have been identified by case managers, as needing more social interaction and encouragement. Training required.

We all need a little support every now and then. Please consider giving the gift of your time to remind someone that they are special and they matter.
